While everybody else experiencing the abduction of a child and the subsequent suspicion and investigation would "live in hell' or "go through hell", the McCanns have studied their bible. While hell would be eternal damnation for mortal sinners, purgatory is so much more comforting as it implies purification in a state of grace with the firm prospect of a future heaven. Purgatory is temporary punishment for minor sins. Killers go to hell.
So hell is a concept that must be avoided at all costs since it involves guilt. A thought that cannot be allowed even when allegedly "speaking right from the heart".
